A group of talented students from Benjamin Logan High School has achieved remarkable success in the prestigious nationwide MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge, showcasing their exceptional mathematical and analytical skills.
Under the guidance of Mrs. Jodie Kavanagh from the math department, students Rylan Norviel, Dylan Vance, Kameron Lockwood, Tristan Sheets, and Kelley Forsythe collaborated to tackle a complex real-world problem involving the socio-economic impacts of heat waves on urban and rural communities. The challenge focused on three key questions: predicting indoor temperatures during heat waves, modeling peak electricity demands, and developing a neighborhood vulnerability score.

The Benjamin Logan team dedicated 14 hours on Sunday to develop a comprehensive 20-page report, using sophisticated tools like MATLAB and Desmos to analyze data and create predictive models. Their hard work paid off as they submitted their findings with just minutes to spare, demonstrating not only their mathematical prowess, but also their ability to work under pressure.

Mrs. Kavanagh, who teaches a variety of math courses including Honors Algebra 2, College Algebra 2 CCP, Statistics CCP, and Advanced Calculus CCP, expressed pride in her students' dedication and teamwork. "These students have gone above and beyond to represent our school and have shown what it means to be committed to excellence," she stated.

The team's effort not only highlights the high caliber of education at Benjamin Logan, but also emphasizes the importance of practical applications of mathematical theories in solving real-world issues. This achievement adds to the school's growing reputation for fostering academic excellence and preparing students for future challenges.
