Benjamin Logan Elementary Students Celebrate Earth Day with Hands-On Cleanup

Students at Benjamin Logan Elementary School took learning beyond the classroom this week as they celebrated the 56th observance of Earth Day with a campus-wide cleanup and environmental activities.

Members of the school’s Elementary Science Club began by exploring the history and global impact of Earth Day, 

then shifted their focus to hands-on work by preparing pollinator plots and garden beds for the upcoming growing season.

​Students also participated in a team-based cleanup of the school’s land lab, collecting a large amount of litter and helping restore the outdoor learning space.

“The Environmental Science Club did a land lab clean up Wednesday afternoon,” said advisor Bruce Smith. “Most of what we collected went into the dumpster by the stadium, but there were a few items we left out. The marker cone appeared to be a victim of last week’s wind event, and we thought someone might be missing it. We also knew that tires can’t be placed in the general waste stream and are exploring options to take them to CHARM.”

During the cleanup, students even spotted a toad, a positive sign of a healthy ecosystem, as amphibians are often considered important environmental indicators.

The experience provided students with a meaningful opportunity to connect classroom lessons with real-world environmental stewardship, reinforcing the importance of caring for their surroundings.
