TRC Launches New SmartDrive Advanced Teen Driving Program This Summer

​The Transportation Research Center (TRC) in East Liberty is bringing back advanced driver education opportunities for local teens with the launch of its new SmartDrive Program this summer.

From 2003 through 2020, TRC operated an advanced teen driving school that helped train thousands of young drivers throughout the region with a focus on safe vehicle operation skills. Now, the organization is continuing that legacy with an updated hands-on driving course designed to help new drivers build confidence and improve roadway safety.

The new SmartDrive Program combines classroom instruction with extensive in-vehicle training on TRC’s private test course in East Liberty.

According to TRC, the course focuses on real-world driving situations and teaches students critical skills including:

• Defensive driving and hazard awareness
• Loss of traction and recovery
• Distracted driving awareness
• Modern vehicle safety features and their limitations
• Basic preventative vehicle maintenance

TRC noted that motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of death for teenagers, with drivers ages 16-19 nearly three times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash.

Eight weekend class dates are currently scheduled for this summer at the TRC facility in East Liberty:

• June 12
• June 13
• June 26
• June 27
• July 24
• July 25
• August 14
• August 15

Officials describe this as a “soft launch” of the new program as they begin reintroducing the training opportunity to local families and community partners.
