The Mills Brothers: Pioneers of American Music Honored in Bellefontaine

Born in Piqua, Ohio, the Mills Brothers—John Jr., Herbert, Harry, and Donald—grew up and attended school in Bellefontaine. They became the first African-American vocal group to perform on a national radio broadcast and achieve commercial success. Their innovative harmonies and instrumental imitations captivated audiences worldwide.

​In 1930, the Mills Brothers signed a three-year contract with CBS Radio, marking a significant milestone as the first African-American artists to host a national network radio show. Their debut recording, "Tiger Rag," became a nationwide best-seller, followed by hits like "Paper Doll" and "You Always Hurt the One You Love." 

After the untimely death of John Jr. in 1936, their father, John Sr., joined the group, allowing them to continue their musical journey. Over their career, the Mills Brothers recorded more than 2,000 songs, selling over 50 million copies and earning numerous accolades. 

Today, a historical marker at Brown Park in Bellefontaine commemorates their legacy, honoring their contributions to music and their role in breaking racial barriers in the entertainment industry.
