Why Photography? Susie Jarvis, the creator of Snapshots Photography Camp, discovered her passion for teaching photography through an after-school enrichment program. “When my kids were in elementary school, I was asked if I wanted to teach an after-school program. Photography was on the list, and I thought, 'Why not?' It was instant love, helping young artists fall in love with photography too,” Jarvis explains. This experience inspired her to open a studio in Bellefontaine and extend her teaching to the broader community. “I’ve been blown away by the talent and drive the kids have to learn about photography,” she adds.
Exploring and Creating The curriculum is dynamic, involving both outdoor excursions and studio work. “We will be walking around downtown exploring lighting and architecture, photographing movement,” Jarvis describes the outdoor activities. The studio sessions will allow campers to delve into portrait photography, experimenting with different poses and props. This combination ensures a comprehensive learning experience in both technical and artistic aspects of photography. Gallery Show: A Platform for Pride and Confidence The camp concludes with a gallery show where students can display their framed prints. Jarvis values this aspect of the program highly, recognizing its impact on the young photographers’ self-esteem. “I like having the opportunity for the students to see their photos displayed professionally for the gallery show. Being able to invite friends and family and allow them to showcase their work helps build confidence and a sense of pride for their accomplishments,” she says. More Than Just a Camp Ultimately, Snapshots Photography Camp is more than just a place to learn about photography. “It’s a fun way to explore our downtown, meet and work with some other local businesses, and just have fun learning to capture beautiful images in everyday life,” Jarvis enthuses. She believes that the skills learned at the camp are beneficial across all walks of life and is passionate about sharing her love of photography.
