Logan County, established in 1818 with Bellefontaine as its county seat, is rich in history and unique landmarks. Known for “a little bit of everything,” the county is home to the nation’s first concrete street, Court Avenue; the shortest road in the country, McKinley Street; and the highest point in Ohio.
The courthouse itself, originally constructed in 1870 just five years after the Civil War, has long stood as a centerpiece of downtown Bellefontaine. The building boasts remarkable architecture and a storied past. In 2012, a storm severely damaged the courthouse tower, leading to its condemnation. After six years of dedicated restoration, the tower and building were fully repaired and reopened to the public, once again serving as a proud landmark for the community. The Seats of Justice mini-documentary series explores the history, culture, and civic pride represented in Ohio’s county courthouses. The Logan County episode highlights not only the building’s striking design and renovations, but also the broader heritage of the county itself. The episode is now available for viewing on the Ohio Channel, giving both residents and history enthusiasts across the state a chance to appreciate Logan County’s unique place in Ohio’s story.
