Flatwoods Schoolhouse: Preserving African American Educational History in Logan County

 At the northwest corner of North Main Street and Lake Avenue in Veteran’s Park stands a humble yet powerful reminder of Ohio’s African American history: the Flatwoods Schoolhouse. Originally built around 1868, this one-room schoolhouse served as a beacon of education for the children of Flatwoods, a historically Black community in Bokescreek Township.

​The residents of Flatwoods were descendants of enslaved people, many of whom may have traveled north via the Underground Railroad to settle in Ohio. Seeking freedom and opportunity, they established a close-knit community in rural Logan County, and the construction of this schoolhouse marked a major step in building a future through education.

For over 50 years, the Flatwoods Schoolhouse provided a space for learning, growth, and community. It remained in operation until 1923. Remarkably, some of the original chalkboard writing from its final lessons still survives, offering a rare, tangible connection to the past.

In 1999, the schoolhouse faced demolition, but local preservation efforts, including the support of the Logan County Historical Society and Bellefontaine Middle School’s sixth-grade enrichment class, helped save the structure. It was carefully relocated to Veteran’s Park in West Mansfield, where it now stands as a living history museum.

Visitors can explore the schoolhouse and reflect on its significance as a symbol of resilience, education, and community heritage. The Logan County Historical Society continues to maintain the site, ensuring the legacy of Flatwoods and its students is never forgotten.re to edit.
