Dr. Earl S. Sloan: From Harness Maker to Philanthropic Pioneer

​In the quaint village of Zanesfield, Ohio, a historical marker stands in tribute to Dr. Earl S. Sloan (1848–1923), a local innovator whose entrepreneurial spirit and generosity left an enduring legacy.​

Born in Zanesfield, Sloan began his career apprenticing as a harness maker, a trade he learned from his father, Andrew Sloan. Andrew, known as the "Village Vet," had developed a liniment to treat horses' ailments, a remedy that would later become the foundation of the family's fortune. Earl Sloan expanded upon his father's formula, marketing "Sloan's

Liniment" as a treatment "for man and beast." The product gained widespread popularity, leading to the establishment of a successful business headquartered in Boston.​

Despite his commercial success, Dr. Sloan remained deeply connected to his hometown. He financed the construction of the Sloan Library in Zanesfield, aiming to provide educational resources to the community. Additionally, he funded the establishment of the Sloan Industrial School, designed to teach trades and domestic sciences to local youth, reflecting his belief in the value of practical education.​

Today, visitors can find the historical marker commemorating Dr. Sloan's contributions at the Zanesfield Cemetery, located on County Road 153. This marker not only honors his entrepreneurial achievements but also his commitment to community development and education.​
