Discovering the Past: Mac-O-Chee Fort Ancient Culture Site Presentation Set for Logan County4/14/2025
the course of 15 years, Mr. Shipley—assisted by amateur archaeologists—excavated grid squares and sifted thousands of cubic feet of soil, uncovering a rich array of artifacts tied to the Ohio Fort Ancient peoples.
Recovered items include fragmented pottery vessels, flint arrowheads, stone and bone tools, smoking pipes, and stone ornaments—all of which reflect the distinct material culture of the Fort Ancient society, which thrived in the Ohio River Valley between 1000 and 1650 A.D. During his presentation, Mr. Shipley will showcase images of the excavation process and share insights on the variety of cultural materials found at the Mac-O-Chee site. He will also provide comparative analysis with artifact assemblages from other Fort Ancient sites across Ohio, as well as Mississippian culture sites he has studied in Missouri, Kentucky, Illinois, and Arkansas. This event offers a rare opportunity to learn about the deep history of Monroe Township and the surrounding region, and to appreciate the intricate connections between Ohio’s ancient cultures and broader prehistoric societies in the Midwest.
