Celebrating Social Work Month in Logan County

As we celebrate Social Work Month in Logan County, it's important to recognize the vital work being done by the Logan County Department of Job & Family Services (LCDJFS). This agency is dedicated to assisting families in their time of need, helping them improve their quality of life and future through a comprehensive range of supportive services.

The LCDJFS provides numerous key services that have made a significant impact on the community. These services

include temporary financial assistance, food stamps (SNAP), Medicaid, and various workforce and employment services. The agency's mission is to move people away from public assistance and towards self-sufficiency by providing support such as health coverage, transportation, and childcare.

One of the standout programs is the Ohio Works First (OWF), which is part of Ohio’s Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program. OWF emphasizes self-sufficiency, personal responsibility, and employment, offering cash benefits to eligible families for up to 36 months. Additionally, the Medicaid program provides health care coverage to low-income and medically vulnerable individuals, ensuring they receive necessary health services.

The agency is also proud of its Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program, which aims to increase employment, job retention, earnings, and occupational skill attainment by participants. This program targets adults, dislocated workers, and youth, providing them with the education and training needed for long-term success.

In recent years, the LCDJFS has adapted to meet the changing needs of the community by expanding its hours open to the public and allowing consumers to apply for programs online, over the phone, and in person. This flexibility ensures that all families can access the services they need.

One of the biggest challenges faced by the department is the security of state and federal funding. Budgets change every few years, affecting the flexibility of the programs. Despite this, the agency has successfully brought Adult Protective Services back, addressing the needs of the fastest-growing population in Logan County—senior citizens.

Collaboration with other organizations and agencies is a cornerstone of the LCDJFS' approach. The agency participates in several coalitions and workgroups with community partners to share information and avoid duplicating services. This collaborative effort enhances the overall effectiveness of the services provided.
