Participants will begin their experience inside the historic castle, where they’ll learn how the stone and wood used to build Mac-A-Cheek were sourced directly from the surrounding land over 150 years ago. Highlights include viewing intricate wooden walls and floors crafted from local trees and discovering how wood becomes preserved through the natural process of petrification.
Rebecca Wilden from the Mechanicsburg Library will offer a special reading of One Day This Tree Will Fall by Leslie Bernard Booth, adding a literary touch to the morning’s activities. Following the indoor session, the program continues outdoors with naturalist Kris Shannon leading a nature scavenger hunt and a seed-planting activity, allowing participants to take home a piece of the experience. In the event of rain, outdoor activities will be adapted to take place under tents. Nurture Nature is presented by the Mac-A-Cheek Foundation for the Humanities (MFH) with support from the Mary Eleanor Morris Fund of the Columbus Foundation. The event is free to attend and open to the public. Piatt Castle Mac-A-Cheek is located at 10051 Township Road 47, one mile east of West Liberty. The site is currently open for public tours on weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with daily hours (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) beginning May 24. Proceeds from admissions support MFH and its educational programming. To learn more about Piatt Castle, view the seasonal event schedule, or book a group tour, visit www.piattcastle.org.
