5 Things to Keep in Mind This Memorial Day Weekend

As Memorial Day approaches, families across the country are preparing for cookouts, road trips, and the unofficial start to summer. But beyond the three-day weekend, it’s also a time to pause, reflect, and show respect.

Before you fire up the grill or head out on the water, here are five important things to keep in mind this Memorial Day weekend:
  1. Remember the Reason
Memorial Day is a time to honor the men and women of the U.S. military who gave their lives in service to our country. Whether you attend a local ceremony, visit a veterans’ memorial, or simply take a quiet moment of reflection, remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice is the heart of this national holiday.
  2. Practice Safe Driving
With more people hitting the road, traffic increases—and so does the risk of accidents. Plan ahead, obey speed limits, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. If you’re traveling, leave extra time and make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.
  3. Stay Safe Around Water
Lakes, rivers, and pools will be busy. Whether boating, swimming, or fishing, make sure you use proper safety gear—especially life jackets. Keep a close eye on children and know the signs of drowning. Alcohol and water activities don’t mix.
  4. Watch the Grill
Backyard barbecues are a holiday tradition, but grilling accidents can happen in an instant. Always supervise the grill, keep it away from anything flammable, and ensure it’s cleaned properly before and after use.
  5. Check in on Veterans and Families
While Memorial Day is about those we’ve lost, it’s also an opportunity to support the families who carry their memory and the veterans who served alongside them. A simple message or visit can mean more than you know.

Memorial Day is about more than just a long weekend. It’s a time to celebrate freedom, reflect on sacrifice, and take care of one another. Whatever your plans, stay safe—and don’t forget why we have this day in the first place.
